Floradora, Part 6, Replacing Eyes

Hello! While you were out gallivanting around and having a big ole time I’ve been busy cleaning this dolly’s face. As I said earlier, I like to use a gentle white toothpaste and a very soft bristled toothbrush to clean bisque. Just be sure to wash off residue. She looks ever so much better now and smells minty fresh, too! Before I work on her eyes, I lay the head on a little bed of napkins or towels, with two rolls on the sides so the head doesn’t roll away while I’m working on it. Since the eyes are stationary and came out in one piece, I’m simply going to coat the piece of plaster with a thin layer of extra strong white glue, using a small paintbrush. I added a bit of yellow to the glue so you could see what I’ve done. Next I slip the plaster piece back into its place inside the head. It’s a perfect fit. Now I will take my brush and dab some glue around the edges of the plaster inside the head, just to make sure the piece is glued in there good. I prefer to use a fairly innocuous glue for this kind of job, one that gives me plenty of time to shift the piece around till it fits perfectly and one I can easily wipe off eyes or lashes or anything else the glue happens to get its self on. If you’re really paranoid about the eyes staying put, you can smooth a bit a clay resin or other self drying clay material around the plaster once it’s back inside the head. I’ve even heard of people running a bead of hot glue around it. It looks a bit messy though and seems like overkill.

Now doesn’t she look pretty?…I’d tell her she looks pretty if I were you…she knows where you live.
