Mad Doll Doctor

Lest you think I’m not well rounded, I want to assure you, I am not just a mad doll doctor, I have other avenues of artistic expression. For instance, I am also A “Peeved Pet Sculptor”. This is a life sized chihuahua dog I have been working on. His name is Benny. Benny is an obedience school drop-out. It’s not his fault, he has the metabolism of a hummingbird on Red Bull, plus he has a habit. His habit is BALL. The only thing going through Benny’s little head is: Throw the ball…throw the ball…THROW THE FREAKIN BALL!!!!

Benny began as a wire armature, which I bent and worked until I got a pleasing shape. Next I filled and layered the body with newspaper soaked in paper mache. Once he was thoroughly dry I used Paper Clay to get a smooth surface to paint on. His head was made the same way, except instead of paper clay I used a very hard resin called Apoxie Sculpt for his ears, mouth, tongue and teeth. I used little piece of wires for the teeth, then covered them with Apoxie Sculpt. I also used Apoxie Sculpt for his toenails. I gave his head a first coat of paint just to make sure it smooth. I will finish painting his head and eyes before I attach the head to the body. It’s just easier to paint all the little nooks and crannies without the body in the way. I think Benny will be spotted.
